Review:
Wow! Just Wow! I really didn’t know what to expect when going into this book series, because I haven’t seen it in a while and everything on the TikTok aesthetics were about Cassian and Salem from book two and three. It seemed that book one was the world building aspect of the series, so obviously I had to read it. The blurb was a bit vague going in and I thought he was wrongly accused and that’s why he was being arrested and being taken to the Dome. However, that wasn’t the case. This book was entirely about Cade and Queen Deianira’s romance.
The chapters are quite short so it was a quick and easy read, even though it's over 300 pages long, especially as I had read it on my Kindle, that just made it fly by even quicker. It was written in third person, and for the first time I was actually okay with it because I was prepared. I think it helped with the incredible storyline as well, so I got used to the third person very quickly. The chapters were broken up between the four characters of Cassian, Cade, Deianira and Lia, though Cade and Deianira more compared to the others. At first, I didn't understand why this was going on, because I was in the mindset of it's a romance novel, so I believed it would only need the two main characters. I thought about it more and realised it was a fantasy novel so having multiple characters POVs was very helpful to see different outlooks of the story. When the plot got more dangerous and everyone was split up, each different perspective allowed you to see what separate characters were doing and shows how they weaved their way back together to join the fight of their lives.
There was a lot of twist and turns in this book. I started picking up on clues and hints about things and as I was in the peak of the novel I found out that Salem was not born deaf. Because I'd watched loads of the TikTok aesthetic videos about the series I know that Cassian and Salem end up together but I thought she was born deaf, turns out she ended up being deaf due to a loud noise in the first book. If I hadn't read this book I wouldn't have known that and I wouldn’t have gotten the world building aspect of the series. The world building was easy to understand so I could know what they were talking about without getting too confused.
I really like Devin and I'm so glad that his story didn't end when I thought it would. I think he will turn out to be one of the strongest characters in this series and whatever happened to him in the story helped him build up his strength and confidence. This in turn, allowed him to end up being a part of their new council in the epilogue. And I really enjoyed that!
Another thing that I don't think I'll ever really be able to get my head around, until I start reading the next two books, is that Salem and Cassian end up together. Mostly all of the aesthetics I watched on TikTok around this book were great but based around the idea of Cassian and Salem. I like the idea of these two characters however I hadn’t realised the first book was not based on them. Now it's going to be really weird to read about him and her after I've read about Cade and Deianira. As well as this, in book 1 Cassian is only 19 so in book 2 when it is set seven years later, him being 26, it’s going to be a whole different person presented to me.
I really liked this book. I'm really glad that I bought the series in bulk because that means I can just go on to the next two books and the series won’t end straight away. The first book does end in a cliff hanger, which I'm not usually a fan of, but in this book it works because it builds the tension and it continues my interest in the series. I mean I knew it was going to be good based off the social media aesthetics and the simple cover, but I didn't realize I would enjoy this as much as I did. I’m probably going to be putting it high on my fantasy list because there was just something about it that spoke to me.
I just got to watch the characters strengthen themselves and I saw all these people go through this scarring battle whilst discovering crippling secrets. As it’s a fantasy novel there's loads of different plotlines going on throughout, with all the different characters as somehow it all linked together with Amizah’s incredible writing. It is one of those books where I can't comprehend how an author could write such well-versed plot twists throughout and multiple plot points, because in my mind it would be all jumbled up with how everything is meant to connect together. But kudos to the author because they did it so well with this book and I'm really happy that I get to read the next two.
Until the next chapter,
