Review:

I think this book was even better than the first one. To be honest I didn’t think I would be able to wrap my head around it considering I'd seen Salem, Cassian and Devin in the previous book when they were all a lot younger. I had to try and separate the 19-year-old Cassian with the 26-year-old that was in book 2. It got easier over time especially with as the only POVs in this book were Salem and Cassian.

Ā

I was worried that I wasn't going to enjoy reading about Salem because I assumed she would be made weak and vulnerable, compared to the badass woman that I saw in book 1. That was not the case! In this book she was still such a strong individual, but I also learnt a lot more about her as a person and what makes her, well her. I wouldn't have guessed she had OCD but learning about her coping mechanism and what drives her made her even more amazing. The only problem with this was that when she got attached to Cassian, she spiralled when she was worried for him. Throughout the story she started showing really bad coping behaviours when he wasn't there...especially in the last chapter. I am also really glad that I read the first book and didn’t just skip, because even though it wasn't about their relationship, it helped build a lot of background plot for Cassian and Salem, as well as understanding references that might have popped up.

Ā

The book started quite quick this time with Cassian being brought back to help in the first chapter. I learnt that he has mind reading powers and one of the predictions I had the first is most likely wrong. ☹

Ā

It starts with getting Cassian back to help with the new danger that is approaching that isn’t even human. Their abilities that have got from their ancestors’ have come back to haunt them in the form of Primas and due to the threat being unknown they do not know how to defeat them. On multiple occasions they communicate with these creatures and have research operations but to know a veil as they cannot find a way to defeat them without their people being harmed. The only way they can think of is enter the combat trials to become the Monarch of Patriam by getting rid of the Queen that is trying to steal the powers all for herself. In the second half of this book there is the push and pull between Salem and Cassian base on the decision of who is going to enter. All the other characters are just trying to figure out ways to put an end to the terror without needing to break up Ā fights between their own people. They all see themselves as one big family so with this they don’t want to get loos anyone however DeianiraĀ seems to think that some people are more expendable than others.

Ā

As it is set 7 years later after the epilogue in book 1 we get to Cade and Deianira. At the end of the first book it is learnt that they are pregnant and throughout the second book you get to learn about their strengthening relationship as well as getting to meet Devin and Emori’s little girls. This aspect of the book I really enjoyed, it was sort of like a extended epilogue but with so much more happening to continue the epic plot line.

Ā

I have watched way to may aesthetics about these books on TikTok and with this I caused a tiny problem. It got to the point where I wanted to read about all those incredible moments that had I had seen in the social media posts. However, when thhey didn’t appear in this book as much as I thought they would I was confused. I was able to pinpoint the certain scenes that I had already had a glimpse at but there wasn’t as many as expect. I guess I'll have to start the next one if I want to complete the puzzle in my mind.

Ā

This one didn't seem to have as many plot twists compared to the first book but I am going to put it down to Amizah trying to set everything up for the third and final book. It's going to be a-maz-ing! Especially as I see a good 700 pages in my near future!

Ā

Though there is an annoying cliffhanger placed at a very unexpected and saddening moment it real draws you and practically insists that you read the next book to learn more about what is going down. IĀ can't wait to see how things are going to work out. I even started on my predictions for the next book based on the knowledge I have and the title. I just know there is going to be a lot of drama as I have that sensation when I can just feel it in my bones.

Ā

The sad thing is that I don't think I'm ever going to be truly ready to say goodbye to these characters, but what makes it worse is I know it’s going to be soon. Anyway on to King of Patriam.

Ā

Until the next chapter,
